Thursday 3 July 6pm ‘Restoration of the Norman Priory in the Nineteenth Century’
Illustrated talk by Rob Walker on the restoration led by Gilbert Scott. £5
The Priory suffered a devastating fire in 1699 which destroyed the roof, some window glass and furnishings. The church was restored by the famous Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1860 and 1880, who restored the central and south naves, carried out some restoration work on the tower and discovered medieval gems. Retired buildings conservation officer and stained-glass expert Robert Walker, author of ‘The Medieval Stained Glass of Herefordshire and Shropshire’, will guide us through the challenges faced by Scott and his team, and their success is restoring this beautiful building which remains at the heart of the life of Leominster.
